190th Anniversary

Lochmaben Curling Club recently celebrated their 190th Anniversary, having been founded in 1823. Read on for more information and photos.
The first official meeting of the Lochmaben Curling Society was held in the Lochmaben Town Hall on 22nd December 1823.  The first President and Secretary of the club were agreed and the first election of Skips was held. At that time rinks – or teams – were made up of eight men each bringing one stone each to play – so for a local Parish Bonspiel. say against Dryfesdale Curling Club, or Tinwald Curling Club seven rinks of sixteen men took part a grand total of 112 turning out to play.
It was this 190th Anniversary that Lochmaben Castle Curling Club  celebrated on Tuesday 18th February, to coincide with the Annual Bonspiel and Prize giving. A lady member of the club, who wishes to remain anonymous,  baked a wonderful cake in the form of a curling stone. The Lady President, Rena Hastings and Mr. President Gavin Muir, did the honours of cutting the cake, which followed a short talk I gave on the history of the beginnings of the club
