Dog Fouling and Litter

There have been several complaints from the residents of Lochmaben about the amount of dog faeces and litter in the streets, and public areas.

Toxocara canis is a common worm infection in dogs.

Children can be infected by picking up the disease from the environment or from handling dogs, which can cause blindness. Toxocariasis is spread in the faeces (stools) of infected dogs. To prevent the spread of the infection, dog-owners should always dispose of dog faeces in a responsible way.

It is an offence to allow your dog to foul footpaths and any public areas, this means anywhere that the public walk, including the loch paths, & parks.  The Environment Officer needs as much information as possible for him to carry out an investigation.  He would need a description of the dog and owner, the place and time of the offence, and whether this is a regular route taken etc.  If possible a name and address.

Anyone who reports an offender will be treated to complete confidentiality.

It is also an offence to drop litter anywhere, and both these offences carry a £40 fixed penalty.

To report an incidence of fly tipping, please give the location and a description of what has been dumped. If possible any information on who left the material or the registration number of the vehicle from which it was dumped would be helpful.

The Environmental officer is responsible for a large area and has appealed to the general public for their help to bring offenders to his notice so that they can be dealt with in the appropriate way.

The offender will be dealt with by the environmental officer himself.

If anyone sees these offences taking place please telephone 030 33 33 3000
