Speaking after the Board’s decision, Chairman Mike Keggans said:

“The NHS Board is firmly committed to the vision and strategic aims of the Clinical Services Strategy.

The decision to pause the process is to afford the Board a further opportunity to review the options and consider how they might be enhanced to reflect the views of the public.

In making this decision the NHS Board acknowledges the tremendous commitment given by many staff in taking this very important consultation forward over many months. This work will continue to form the basis of our review going forward.

At this stage it is difficult to put an exact timescale for this review. However, in noting that we will have a new NHS Board in June, it will be important that new members have time to fully understand the issues and challenges facing the NHS before presenting the enhanced options to them for consideration. I also recognise that with the Scottish Parliamentary elections due in 2011, it is unlikely that the opportunity to consult again will take place until after those elections. I anticipate, therefore, that the formal consultation on the revised options would commence in the Summer of 2011.

This period of review will be important to ensure we set out a single overall plan for health services for the years ahead. During this review, the Board will continue the work to improve existing services and to take forward pathfinder projects in support of the review process.”

As a result of this decision, the NHS Board is cancelling all consultation meetings arranged for February. However, anyone wishing to offer views and comments on the Clinical Services Strategy can continue to do so via the details below.
