On Sunday the 20th of July the newly formed Castle Loch Volunteer Group met for the first time to remove an invasive species known as Japanese Knotweed from the banks of the Castle Loch, Lochmaben. Led by the Dumfries and Galloway Ranger Service the group helped to collect 2 van loads of the invasive species which will now be taken to Landfill and disposed of in the correct manner.
6 hardy volunteers turned up for the event which proved to be a great success and also great fun. What surprised me most was how well the team instantly gelled, and how quickly new friendships can be made.
Japanese Knotweed is an invasive species which will spread to new areas very quickly. We thought it was necessary to try and control species due to the thinning of trees in that area earlier this year.
Anyone interested in joining the Castle Loch Volunteer Group should contact D&G Ranger Service on 01387 260366 or email ross.gemmell@dumgal.gov.uk for more information. Thanks go to SNH and SEPA for their advice in the control of this species.
The next meeting will be the 17th August at 2pm. Meet in the Car Park behind the Bowling Club.
