Lockerbie & Lochmaben Probus Club

Established in 1980, your local Probus Club is part of an international association. Your local Club caters for retired professional and business men and currently has around 15 members who meet to chat over coffee and fresh baking before listening to talks on varied topics. 

The Club meets in the Somerton House Hotel, 35, Carlisle Road, Lockerbie DG11 2DR at 10.15 for 10.30 am on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays each month and our speakers usually talk for 20-30 minutes, followed by a question and answer session. Club proceedings are reported in the District Diary section of the Annandale Herald. Membership costs £10 pa.

 Our annual programme also includes special events and lunches with partners, and during 2017 the local Club programme included:

(a) Nine talks by club members, with subjects including: Favourite comic poems, Christopher Clayson CBE, Danube cruise Linz to Budapest, gas pipeline installations, living in Antigua, local place names, local studies and archiving, marketing in Shanghai, metal foundry experiences.

(b) Seven guest speakers, with subjects including: Devil’s Porridge, editing Daily Mail, Emergency Life Support, Eskrigg Reserve, Food Train charity, Fracking, Treens (small antique wooden household utensils).

(c) Two Open Meetings with specialist speakers: British Infantry Section 1944 (with guest historian), and Dumfries & Galloway Blood Bikes.

(d) Summer and New Year lunches, and a putting challenge with presentation lunch, with partners.

(e) A General Knowledge Quiz.

During 2018 our guest speakers will cover subjects as varied as: British military history, model railways, Pitcairn Island (Mutiny on the Bounty), motor vehicles and contemporary history. A members’ and partners’ day-out to the Devil’s Porridge, Dornoch and to the Annan Distillery and its Malting Café is also planned.
