Dumfries and Galloway’s long partnership with the bicycle and cycling is history, as it was in this region that Kirkpatrick Macmillan, a blacksmith on the Drumlanrig estate invented the first pedal cycle in 1840.
Mountain bike trails are available in Ae Forest, 7 miles west of Lochmaben and at Mabie Forest, 12 miles south west of Lochmaben. These forests form part of the amitious £3 million Seven Stanes Cycle project which will result in the development of 7 Mountain bike centres across the South of Scotland.
Lochmaben is an excellent centre for cycle touring with a wide variety of circular routes over undulating terrain or over hills for those who wish a greater challange.
